Magpies are notorious for stealing jewelry and other shiny objects, but did you know that according to studies magpies are actually suspicious of shiny things and tend to approach them with caution?

I like to think that at one point in time they did steal jewelry & gems, but that collectively as a society they learned that the attractive objects only brought trouble and in the end only temporary joy & pleasure. We have no way of knowing whether or not this is true, but there are stories documenting their thievery. Either way, magpies are one of the most intelligent animals on earth and they can not only use tools, play games, and work together with other birds, but they also have a deep emotional understanding within their community. They have been known to grieve and show affection. I find this so fascinating. Birds are often portrayed as cold and calculating animals (think Hitchcock,) but in reality they have a rich inner world that goes beyond mere survival & propagation."

Prints are made on archival acid-free all-natural cold-press paper, 8" x 10"
